Get under the skin of Scottish culture with a visit to the Highland Games   by Dipika Patel

Scotland hosts many different Highland Games tournaments during the spring and summer months and anyone who is planning to rent a castle during this time should make sure that a trip to one of these tournaments is part of their itinerary.

Almost 100 Highland Games are scheduled between May and August at locations around the country which means you should be able to find at least one that you can attend.

Caber tossing, hammer throwing and tug-of-war are among the events for you to enjoy as well as a host of other competitions that cover more mainstream athletic categories such as running.

And to make sure you truly experience Scottish culture during you stay at a self catering castle, you should seek out the dancing and piping contests which characterise these sporting events.

Men wearing kilts bearing their family’s tartan will show off their strength in the fields, accompanied by the sound of bagpipes and surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the British Isles.

You can even try some of the local delicacies with most Highland Games offering Scottish fare to keep spectators and participants refreshed.

Many of the events also have side shows, which can include amusements, fair grounds and performances by drum and pipe bands.

The first of these competitions takes place in May, with tournaments scheduled regularly until the end of August at venues that span the length and breadth of the country.

This means that wherever you hire a castle, there should be at least one Highland Games event planned in the surrounding area at some point during the season.

Glasgow, Stirling and Aberdeen are among the cities which will hold just such an event and they are equally prominent in more rural locations.

Dubbed “the most scenic games in Scotland”, the Morvern Highland Games are worth a visit if you are staying anywhere near Oban or Mull.

The venue for this contest is on the shores of Lochaline, within touching distance of the sound of Mull. Fringed by untouched hills, it truly is a stunning location and certainly worth a visit.

If you are looking for something on a grand scale then the Inverness Highland Games could be for you. It is the biggest event of its kind in the north of the country and runs in conjunction with the Highland Armed Forces Day, which means that you are guaranteed spectacular celebrations.
