The history of Inverness Highlands is long and interesting. The history of Inverness began in the form of a fort but today it is a city that accommodates sixty plus thousand people. Inverness also had five amazing castles one of which was seized by Robert the Bruce who took it from the English in the year 1307.

Later, in the sixteenth century Mary Queen of Scots ordered the hanging of the Governor of Inverness Castle because the Governor did not permit the Queen to enter the Burgh. Inverness is also famous because Bonnie Prince Charles was defeated in the well known Battle of Culloden which took place in 1746.

After this battle another fort was erected and was called Fort George which is even today considered the most outstanding eighteenth century fort in all of Europe. Some years later the Caledonian Canal was built to link Inverness to the west coast of the country. Other famous period buildings in Inverness include the Inverness Town House and there is also Old St. Stephens Parish Church.
