Food and Drink to Experience Whilst Visiting Oban in Scotland   by Thom Sanders

For those of you that love your local food and drink, the picturesque fishing town of Oban on the west coast of Scotland has more than its fair share to offer anyone who loves gastronomic treats and liquid refreshment of the alcoholic variety.

As you can imagine this town is well favoured for its range of seafood thanks to its proximity to the sea and it local fishing industry, with so many choices of fish and seafood it really doesn’t get any fresher than straight off the local fishing boat at the quayside. Some dishes are prepared in a local style or to a local recipe, while others might be more contemporary or even in traditional cuisine styles.

Many of the local restaurants, café’s, bistro’s and hotels will serve up a wide and varied selection of seafood dishes ranging from; locally caught Scottish crab from Mull, mussels, lobster, langoustines, salmon, haddock, hake, halibut and various shellfish such as oysters and scallops.

There are other local dishes and types of food to look out for around the town of Oban, there are many types of meat dishes available too from local farms or sources. You can easily find many locally farmed produce like pork, chicken, pheasant, wild foul and Venison. Although Oban is not near Aberdeen, a visit to Scotland would not be the same without trying a genuine Scottish “Aberdeen Angus Steak” for a steak lover.

People looking for or who want a real taste of Scotland, you will need to try a local “Haggis” dish (when thinking of a haggis it is a kind of savoury pudding, or large sausage), which is traditionally served with “neeps and tatties” (which is translated from Scottish into English; the vegetable called “swede”, or yellow turnip and potatoes, boiled at first and then mashed separately) and served together, if you really want a real liquid addition to accompany the haggis as a meal, it would have to be a small (or “wee dram”) of Whiskey.

For vegetarians you are not left out of the party, you will be spoilt with many café’s, restaurants and bistro’s serving up a wide selection of vegetarian dishes made from locally grown and sourced vegetables, normally these will vary in season, depending on the time of year. Alternatively if you are staying in a self catering holiday cottage or apartment locally you could always go to one of the many fishmongers, butchers or delicatessens and buy the style of food of choice and prepare & cook it to your liking.

It is worth mentioning and well worth a visit to the famous whisky distillery of Oban is situated down near the quayside and it offers a first hand experience of how a real Scottish Highland Malt Whisky is made and you can taste it on the premises after you have had the guided tour. Another stop for liquid refreshment is the Oban Bay Brewery, offering many locally brewed ales and beers to tempt your taste buds and continue your flavour of Oban.

The “Cobb” is perhaps the ultimate outdoor cooking system, and certainly much more than “just a barbecue”… IT DOESN’T SMOKE – the food is isolated from the charcoal, so fat does not drip onto it. IT CAN BE USED AS A CHARCOAL OVEN – delicious pizza in 15 minutes! IT REMAINS COOL TO THE TOUCH ON THE OUTSIDE – so it can be used on a table, or even a wooden deck, without causing any damage. IT ONLY …
